
Columbia Senior Living and Lifestyle Learning Classes by Howard County’s senior community
Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland, offers Howard County’s senior community the chance to explore new interests with lifestyle learning classes, both on campus and online. Ready to write your memoirs but need some help getting started? Then take a class in writing and publishing. Do you prefer to wield a brush instead of a pen? Sign up for a painting class. Interested in learning how to shoot incredible photos with your digital camera? HCC offers a digital photography class.
Named “one of the top continuing education units in North America” by the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Learning Resources Network (LERN), HCC has also won numerous awards, including the 2007 prestigious U.S. Senate Productivity Award, which is the highest Maryland Quality Award given.
With several learning options available to suit your independent living lifestyle, here is some additional information to help you decide if continuing education should be part of your retirement living:
50+ Expo – Wilde Lake High School hosts the annual 50+ Expo on the third Friday of October. Sponsored by the Howard County Office On Aging, the 11th Expo takes place Friday, October 16, 2009, from 9am-4pm. Come visit the HCC booth and get all the information you need on continuing education.
Senior Adult Summer Institute (SASI) – Not sure if you’re ready for full-blown classes? Get a taste of college life with SASI. Lunch and learn for four days on campus while you study topics such as music, philosophy, and art appreciation. Held in late May or early June on the HCC campus, you can register for one or more days. Discounts are given for participating in all four days.
Tuition Waiver- HCC offers tuition waivers to eligible Howard County seniors. Citizens 60+ years of age or with a disability as defined by the Social Security or Railroad Retirement Acts may be able to take noncredit courses, participate in college activities, and pursue a certificate of proficiency or an associate of arts degree. (Contact HCC for more details and to determine eligibility.) Class and material fees are not part of the tuition waiver.
Continuing Education- Also known as “lifelong learning” or “adult education,” Howard County seniors can choose from many noncredit courses. Italian Decoupage, Sit and Knit, Painting Techniques, and Art of the American Masters are just a few of the classes available.
Education to Go (online courses) - Choose from over 185 classes and learn online. Courses run for six to eight weeks, with two lessons offered every week. Writing, personal enrichment, art, internet, and computers are just a few of the subject areas presented.
