Amateur Photography Contest Winners

Have A Pet And A Camera? Don’t Miss These 6 Photo Contests by DeeDee Dobson

If you have a pet or spend time around animals, chances are you have a lot of photos of them (I have thousands of my dog, I’m not kidding). Why not share your photos with the world and get a chance to win a prize at the same time?

Here are six photo contests where you and your pet can gain fame and recognition and in several cases, help support great causes.

Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest

Open to both professional and amateur photographers, the “Spay Day” pet photo contest is an annual event at the Humane Society of the United States, where the proceeds from the “Fundraiser” category goes to spaying and neutering. It’s free to enter, and you can submit an unlimited number of photos. Celebrity judges pick 11 winners from the “Judged” category, and in the “Fundraiser” category, the people get to vote, and the 500 photos with the most votes win. There are some really nice prizes up for grabs: a photo session with acclaimed pet photographer Amanda Jones, gift certificates, books, and more. The 2009 deadline is February 27, but don’t panic if you miss it. Just get working on the photos you will submit next year.

Faces – Photo District News

Photo District News (PDN) is a monthly magazine for professional photographers, and you will face some pretty stiff competition in this one. Don’t let that scare you though – if you don’t try, you can’t win. Their competition “Faces” is all about portraiture, and includes the category “Animal Portraits”. They welcome both pros and amateurs and it’s $35/image and $50/series to enter (for amateurs). Prizes include an online portfolio (at PDN’s PhotoServe), camera equipment, a gallery exhibit, your photo in print, and more. March 16 is the 2009 deadline, but for an added $10/image, you can upload your photos until March 30.

Equine Ideal

The Equine Photographers Network’s annual photo contest welcomes both professionals and amateurs, and centers, of course, on images of horses. It’s $15/image to enter in any of the 14 categories (7 amateur, 7 pro), and the deadline is March 20. Among the prizes are Equine Photographers Network memberships, camera gear, and prints.

Pets & Pals Photo Contest

This annual contest has not been officially announced for 2009 yet, but I have been told that they are planning to start accepting submissions in June or July, and there will be six categories: Shelter Life, Petpourri, People & Pets, Down on the Farm, Dogs, and Cats. No word on the prizes yet, but if past years are any indication, generous cash prizes are the norm.

ASPCA

The proceeds from the ASPCA’s annual contest help injured and abused animals receive the medical care they need, so the more images you enter, the better. No details have been posted yet about the 2009 contest, but it always revolves around a theme. The topic in 2008 was “About Face”, when a great photo of a cat digging/gnawing its way out of a cardboard box was declared the winner and became the cover photo on the fall issue of “Animal Watch”, ASPCA’s magazine.

Club Equestrian’s Monthly Contests

Club Equestrian, an online community for horse lovers, holds monthly photo contests with great prizes for those who spend time with horses (the January prize was a pair of Ariat boots). The contest is open to all US residents, and it’s free to enter (you just need to sign up for a free membership). Each month has a different theme, and the winning photo is selected based on the number of votes it gets from other CE members. Deadline is the 19th of each month, and voting begins on the 20th.

DeeDee Dobson encourages everyone to enter their photos in competitions. On her blog, she writes about pink digital camera options and also talks about the different batteries.
