A Quick Look At Music On The iPhone 4S by Emma Rosher
The general public has now had access to the superb iPhone 4S for a few days and many users of the phone have spent a considerable amount of time trying out the new features that the iOS5 operating system offers. Anybody who has upgraded from a previous iPhone will have noticed that the iPod feature has been renamed as “Music”. Does this change signify the end of the popular iPod portable media player?
The previous four generations of iPhone have all incorporated the iPod facility. In earlier models this feature was one of the unique selling points of the phone with Apple hoping to switch potential iPod consumers over to a new iPhone. Recently however the feature has become less important thanks to all smartphones offering audio playback and large storage capacity. The modern handset has become a singular device for a variety of uses with video playback, photography and internet browsing all possible. Demand for a stand alone audio player has decreased as the majority of the public are already carrying around a device capable of performing this task. One could argue that the same could be said of digital cameras but separate still cameras are still a very lucrative market. This is because no matter how advanced the modern smartphone is it can not replicate the kind of picture quality sported by a dedicated camera. Audio playback is a much more simple affair and most phones can now match the quality and ease of use offered by stand alone audio players. Whether or not this change in name signals the end of the road for the iPod remains to be seen but it is certainly a distinct possibility.
Despite the change in name the iPod software incorporated in the iPhone 4S remains the best example of a great audio feature. Thanks to the new phone being made available in three sizes up to 64GB the internal storage capacity is better than ever. The largest capacity handset is capable of storing a massive 15 thousand individual tracks meaning it is ample for even the largest of audio collections. The advantage the iPhone 4S has over some editions of the iPod device is that the phone uses a capacitive touchscreen. This eliminates the need for a separate flywheel to control volume and track selection. This high quality screen also enables the 4S to display the full album artwork for all songs. This looks superb when the screen is in landscape mode but even when the phone is held in its normal position a small thumbnail of the artwork accompanies various other details about the song you are listening to.
It remains to be seen whether the change in name from iPod to Music on the iPhone 4S signifies the end of the popular portable audio units, however as long as Apple continue to use this excellent software in their phones then they will remain the ultimate devices for music playback.
