Overall
From the onset of its first announcements in the mobile phone and smartphone world, the Q-11 has been hailing moans and inspiring disappointment in many people. Indeed, it is generally believed the phone is disappointing in many instances, as it is not so much different from the Q9. Actually, the Q-11 strikes more through the fact that it has ditched the 3G radio available on the Q9, for Wi-Fi alone.
The absence of 3G ability too on the phone makes some wince. While many do say that 3G reception isn’t stellar everywhere, it does help especially where data speed and streaming content is concerned. The Q-11 however boasts that it can be used in every Wi-Fi hotspot in the world.
Design doesn’t strike; it is pretty standard for phones with a QWERTY keyboard. There is a love-it-or-hate-it reaction to the off-center screen.
The QWERTY thumb board is big and easy to manipulate, and this comes as a relief for smartphone lovers who dislike using a touchpad. However, the giant keyboard could have been helped by a bigger screen.
Still, the Q-11 is rather redeemed by its full QWERTY keyboard, 5-way navigation button and downloadable wallpaper and screensavers. It features what one expects to find in a Smartphone – Bluetooth, USB, email client with built-in GPS and A-GPS function (with support for Google Maps), among others.
The camera also saves the Q-11. The 3 MP camera gives good pics, has flash and 8x digital zoom. Photography enthusiasts will also be delighted to see support for microSD cards with capacities of up to a whopping 32 GB (a single such card is optionally included).
Pros
-Good camera
-Wi-Fi
-One of the best keyboards among smartphones
-microSD expansion supports up to 32 GB
Cons
-No 3G – only quad-band GPRS/EDGE
-Still too tight 2.4″ LCD screen
Special mention
The optimized and easily navigable QWERTY keyboard.
Conclusion
The Q-11 features too much resemblance to the Q9 without anything really improved between the versions. The availability of Windows Mobile 6.1, same as almost all the other smartphones out there, is a deception, as many wanted to see a better OS.
Still, it is more of a wait-and-see situation for this phone as launch is scheduled for December 2008. Pricing is still vague, though it is hoped and believed that the offer will be a relatively good one.
