Navajo Nation Photo Contest Awards Ceremony by Mike Finney
The first Navajo Tourism Photo Contest was a resounding success with over 450 images entered by photographers from eighteen states including District of Columbia and nine countries around the world. The theme of the photo contest was “Discover Navajo” and the awards ceremony scheduled for December 2nd will recognize the entrants who captured the spirit of the Navajo tourism experience connecting the beautiful Diné Bikéyah (Navajoland) and the Navajo people. The 2009 Discover Navajo Photo Contest Awards Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 2nd starting at 11:00AM at the Quality Inn Navajo Nation Capital in Window Rock, Arizona. The ceremony will include the unveiling of the new Discover Navajo Poster featuring the first place winning photo. The ceremony will also reveal the twelve other winners from the photo contest. The Awards Ceremony is presented by the Navajo Nation Tourism Department. A free poster will be given to all attendees.
Photo contest prizes will go to 1st – 3rd place, plus ten additional runner-up participants. The grand prize, valued at $3,590, features a hand woven Navajo rug made by Mary H. Yazzie, $500 cash, a $300 shopping spree at Navajo Arts & Crafts Enterprises with special discounts allowed on handmade items, a $100 gas card, overnight stays with dinner and breakfast at three hotels: Quality Inn: Window Rock, Quality Inn: Tuba City, and The View in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, and their photo will be the image on the new Discover Navajo Poster! Second place will get a handcrafted wedding basket provided by the historic Shonto Trading Post. Third place will get an Antelope Point Marina Logo Jacket and dinner for two at Antelope Point Marina’s Ja’di’ Tooh Restaurant on Lake Powell. The next top ten photo submitters will get a Fire Rock Navajo Casino T-Shirt and either Arizona Highways photography book, Navajo Land: A Native Son Shares His Legacy by Navajo photographer LeRoy DeJolie, or Navajo Nation 1950 Traditional Life in Photographs by Jonathan B. Wittenberg.
