Portrait/Landscape Photography Tips?

Hi, I’m looking to get into landscape and portrait photography and need some tips. I currently have a Canon T2i with the stock lens, but am going to buy a 50mm 1.4 and a 16-35mm 2.8 ultra wide angle pretty soon. Do you have any tips or advice about shooting either types of photography? And also books that you’d recommend reading to get better at it?

There are three distinctions between these lenses and your kit lens: (1) focal length, (2) maximum aperture, (3) optical quality. Most photographers buy lenses when a photographic need demands it, not just to collect lenses. You don’t say what the focal length of your kit lens is. I’m guessing that it covers the range of the two lenses that you want to buy. So that eliminates #1. With respect to number two, do you do a lot of low light shooting? Do you need a wider aperture for shallower depth of field? If you can’t answer either of these questions, then my advice is to save your money and keep shooting with your kit lens for a while. As for #3, there’s no question, the optical quality of the kit lens is average. You will get better resolution and color contrast from the two new lenses. However, I must ask you: if you’re unhappy with your results from your kit lens, can you say that it’s the fault of the lens? You mention that you’re still in learning mode. I would recommend reading the books before you make a major investment in new glass. Without a good understanding of light, composition, and the effects of various camera settings on your photos, you may find yourself disappointed that your more expensive glass doesn’t give you better results than your kit lens.
