The cutting edge Croatian tourism project Welcome reached the island of Hvar on May 24 2011, after a 25km canoe ride from Makarska to the pretty resort of Jelsa on the island’s northerly coast.

A meticulously planned route taking in the highlights of Croatian tourism, which include seven UNESCO global heritage sites and eight national parks, has been winding its way down the coast using a spread of transport – kayak, bike, hiking, wind-surfing and many others – since it commenced the 1st leg from Savudrija to Porec by canoe on April 5 down the Istrian coast.
While one of the purposes of the project is to have a laugh, there are rather more serious aims for the Welcome project with regard to Croatian tourism. These include promoting Croatia’s surprising natural beauty and heritage, discovering, studying about and promoting some of the country’s lesser known regions along the winding ‘Welcome ‘ route, and introducing Croatia to a bigger audience as the ultimate activity and journey tourism destination, writes suite101.com.
