I’m a serious amateur photographer needing to upgrade my camera, but not sure what to look for?
Right now I’m using a Canon Powershot G2 and while it was a good camera for me to learn on, I’m looking to get a better one. I’ve taken a beginner photography class that covered the basics (the types of photography, aperture, shutter speed, etc) and I’m taking a more advanced class this fall. I’m hoping to get a better camera before that class.
There are sooo many cameras out on the market today, and I’m really not sure what to look for. I’m only 15, so no job, which means that I don’t have that big of a budget. I’m willing to spend up to $500, but if that’s not enough for a nice camera, then I’ll go higher. But I really prefer not to go over that amount. So, does anyone have any advice? What I’m most interested in is portraits. Any help would be veeery appreciated!
If you’re going to be using any kind of external flash, I would definitely have to say that in your price range, the Nikon D3000 is definitely your only choice.
However, if you don’t really need the easy-to-setup flash feature, I would recommend the Canon Rebel XS (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/571144-REG/Canon_2762B003_EOS_Rebel_XS_SLR.html) which is exactly $500 at that link, the cheapest I can find it.
My reasoning is that if you don’t need an extra flash, Canon is the way to go because of the lenses. Once you pick a DSLR brand, it’s hard to switch because your lens won’t be compatible with the different mount. Canon lenses are much more common and are generally slightly better than Nikon’s, plus, if you ever get an even nicer camera, it’ll save you a bit of cash since you won’t need to go and buy a new set of lenses for a different brand.
