Make Your Photos Look Professional – The Digital Photography Background! by Dan Eitreim
A chance to use a digital photography background is certainly one of – if not THE largest benefit of the digital revolution.
Back in bygone days of film, when you required a specific version of background, you were virtually restricted to painted backgrounds or actually going on location. Altering a set was very difficult.
Typically, as soon as you wanted to do a simple touch up – as an example, get rid of a waste can from behind your model – it would involve physically going onto the negative and actually painting it out. It had been the same with facial touch-ups.
Accomplishing this seamlessly took a genuine expertise.
Since the negatives were so little, this was an exceedingly hard task and few photographers had the ability to do it well – or even at all. So, they wound up having to pay trained retouchers to complete the work. Not a cheerful scene.
Another alternative was to print the picture and physically paint out the offending little bit of surroundings…on each individual photograph! Again, not so good. This too took artistic expertise and took considerable time!

The final method was to get a sharp knife or razor blade and cut your model from the photograph and glue them into a picture of the scene you sought. This in no way looked accurate and could be spotted as fake a mile away!
So, to get around that, photographers had to spend literally a large number of dollars in real sets, props, painted backgrounds, etc. – plus have a place to stockpile them. This made running a studio a requirement. It was extremely hard to haul those backgrounds and props around and having the client come to your studio was really the only true choice.
And, they were costly!
As an example,, if we would like an image of a baby, sitting in an antique washtub, against a dappled brown and tan “Old Masters” background…it was required that we would have to purchase the “Old Masters” hand painted canvas backdrop.
They sell for for nearly a $1000 to buy really expert one. And then we had to acquire an vintage washtub. If we could even locate one, we might expect to pay $50 – $100.
All this outlay was before we even found out the the baby is terrified of washtubs and screamed through the total session.
Enter digital!
Now, for only a few greenbacks we can purchase dozens of digital backdrops! On the whole, what a digital photography background is, is really a photograph of the background or even a prop stored on a Compact disk.
Now for $20 or $30 we purchase a Disc with digital photographs of dozens of “Old Masters” backdrops, an additional Disc holds dozens of different varieties of vintage washtubs.
And then we open them up in Photoshop or Gimp, digitally drop the washtub we are fond of in front of the background we like, add in any earlier done shot of the newborn and ta daaa! Inside a matter of only a few minutes, we have our child sitting in an antique washtub in front of an “Old Masters” backdrop.
No enormous cash outlay, no struggling with props or storage, no need to get a studio! The digital photography background puts brilliantly inventive photography within reach of us all!
