Photography: Developing Film problems?
I’ve been running into the problme that when I finish developing my film I get gaps of nothing I end up only getting 5 to 9 pictures that actually developed. what is causing this problem. I use a manual camera olympus. Black and white film.
You need to determine whether this is a development problem or a possible camera malfunction.
Are you doing the developing yourself? If so look carefully at the film – if it was NOT loaded onto the processing reel properly the film will usually have very uneven lines where some of the film has stuck together. If that is the case take a roll of blank film (the cheapest you can get, you are only using it to practice handling) pull it out of the canister and practice loading film on the developing reel until you can do it in the dark.
Are you getting partial images? If only some of the images are appearing but the ones that appear are complete you most likely DO NOT have a developing problem.
If you camera has an electronic shutter you may have a bad battery, some Olympus 35mm models did not have On/Off switches so batteries could run down quickly. If you have that problem take the batteries out of the camera when you are not using it.
If that isn’t the problem and if the “missing” pictures are completely blank, you most likely have an intermittent shutter which needs to be repaired.
If some images appear very, very faint or so dark they are almost black you could have either a sticking diaphragm or a damaged or malfunctioning meter. Either of these would also require repair. Depending on the model you may be better off buying another used one on ebay or from a local camera store.
Hope that helps. Good luck.
