The photography diffuser is one of the most convenient items of apparatus a photographer can have possession of! They are able to flatten out wrinkles, diffuse the light, help us manipulate our shadows and tone down those harsh contrasts! They are surely indispensable!
First…what exactly is a photography diffuser?
You can find a couple various kinds of photography gear that could be considered a diffuser. You can spread some Vaseline on the lens – it is diffusing the light that goes into the camera and could be labeled a photography diffuser. Or, you could have a cloud passing by in front of the sun and THAT as well can be called a diffuser!
For the needs of this information, we’ll imagine everything put on the lens as being a filter and anything put in front of the light source as a diffuser.
As I said, a cloud could be a diffuser…
Think of the sun. In relation to our size, it truly is only a little item way up there in the sky. Since it is very bright, nonetheless small, it results in some pretty harsh, black shadows.
Envision a white puffy cloud floating in front of the sun…What occurs?
Now the sunlight is striking the back of the cloud and bouncing far and wide! When the – diffused – illumination comes through the cloud, it’s now turned the complete cloud into a huge diffused light source.
Because our light is currently diffused, it is actually softer and less intense. In addition in view of the fact that the light source is far larger, the light tends to wrap around our model and moderate or even almost eradicate the shadows!
That’s a photography diffuser and ALL diffusers run on the identical principle.
Next think of a photo studio strobe lighting system.
We don’t usually have clouds hanging around in the photo studio therefore how can we diffuse our lights?
Simple! Simply put a quantity of translucent stuff in front of the light.
Maybe you have noticed photographers shooting their light through umbrellas? That’s a diffuser. Diffusers could be labeled umbrellas, softboxes, screens and dozens of other names based on the shape and materials they are made of.
However, if you think of a photography diffuser as not anything more than a simulated cloud, you should have no problem understanding the way they work and when they must be used.
