photography display ideas?
I love to take pictures and what would be a good way to display photos in my room on my wall?
There are probably just as many ways to display photography as there are ways to photograph subjects. Lots of questions to ask yourself. How many walls are you trying to use? Dedicate each wall to one particular style or theme, while you avoid mixing B/W and color.
Five images or fifty? This will help to determine whether you should arrange the images in a single horizontal band or use “Salon-style” hanging (look this up if you need to).
I am answering this under the presumption that the images are (or will be) framed. Try to match the framing material with the subject matter. For a photo series of vintage toys I shot about 10 years ago, I used pieces of Erector Sets to build the frames. If you are shooting outdoorsy nature work, consider stained wood frames. Shooting cars or tech photos might call for metal frames. Fashion photos might be best framed in low-profile black frames, or bulky frames covered with leatherette (which brings me to another point: you can buy materials at craft stores to customize your frames, and make them truly unique) or feathers, or fabric, or… well, you get the idea.
Another idea you might consider is the temporary hanging. I reserved a wall space to hold ten (8×12 photos, matted to) 16×20 frames. After framing and hanging a series of ten photographs, I started shooting and framing ten more, in a different theme. Two or three months later, I replaced the ones on the wall with the new works; since they were all the same size, I left the wall hardware in the same places, and it was like being in a whole new room for another two or three months until I refreshed the images again. If budget is a factor (as it is for most people), use “flex-tab” -equipped frames that can be taken down and refitted with a different photo later. Store your photos carefully for future use. If 16×20 is too big, go with 11×14 or 8×10. As another option, this might even give you an opportunity to self-assign a photo series to work on. Instead of getting your room to fit your images, turn it around and shoot images to fit your room (or at least one wall).
Shoot your summertime pics now for hanging when the winter rolls around…
You’ve got plenty of things to think about, and your shooting style and budget will likely be the largest factors to consider, such as the extravagance of the frames, and whether or not to use matting.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
