Photography Documentaries

How can I turn this into a photography documentary?

I have less than a week to come up with a documentary for my photography class, and I’ve kind of come up with a subject but not really. I work at an animal shelter, and I LOVE it, so I was thinking maybe I could do a documentary about animals in a shelter. Only thing is, I have no idea how I would do that, like where do I start? How could I get a different variety of pictures in there, so it’s not just a bunch of animals in cages looking sad? How could I make it into a “story” of sorts?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

I have seen this done at a couple of newspapers I worked with. One photo story at a shelter actually got more comments from readers than any other story that whole year.

Focus some on the people who work at the shelter. Get pictures of them doing things with and for the dogs. You could try one of these things:

-Follow a worker through their day, like a “day in the life” photo shoot.
-Follow one animal through the process of coming to the shelter, then being put up for adoption and (if you are lucky) being adopted.

Lots of things happen in a shelter: veterinary care, cage cleaning, dog washing, flea dips. A dog in a flea dip can be a very interesting picture.

Don’t bypass the cage photos. Maybe hang around until you get just a paw coming through the bars of a cage, shooting down the row of cages.

Okay, I’m getting carried away here. I see a superb photo story in your future.

Remember: Entire, Detail, Framing/Focus, Angle, Timing. Put all of these things together and you have your documentary.

The soundtrack for The War, documentarian Ken Burns’s 2007 PBS series on World War II, alternates between earlier, wartime, and postwar material, all designed to complement the narrative. The material was clearly selected to evoke the mood of the era: Benny Goodman’s sextet tears off a hot 1942 “Wang Wang Blues,” and Count Basie lets fly with “Basie Boogie” (1941) and the prewar “How Long Blues.”…
