Horse Painting And Photography
A lady artist from Walla Walla said that owners love their horses so much that they are always the best for them. Winning does not mean everything to these owners. One artist, from a ranch on Springdale Road, has developed a successful business model based on the rider steed relationship. Her services include painting on commission, as well as photographing horse shows. Majority of her customers are just people who enjoy horses, although she has painted some truly famous horses, such as a famous actor’s championship endurance mount, Shur Raff Zi.
For this artist, her work is as much pleasure as business. She first became interested in horses as a teenager. She started sketching nuns at age 11, which she continued to work at. Her horses seem to jump out of their portraits, because of the depth added by her shading, developed from her long experience in drawing. She works with photographs of the subject. Any on site sketches are really notes about peculiar horse characteristics. She says that some horse owners are particular about how their horses are portrayed. Emphasis of a certain angle or characteristic may be a requirement for a client.
Their owners know them inside out, from facial expressions to cowlicks. Most owners are more interested in having their horses look natural than perfect. She has covered a wide range of breeds and events, including barrel racing and cutting.
Horses in action are harder to render. One must look for the few good angles of a cantering horse, for instance. Using a telephoto lens, she can catch that elusive action angle. For some shows she would take photos of the winners, which she would turn into paintings later as prizes. Those photographers who take on shows full time find it easier to develop pictures on the spot with dark rooms in their vans. Even when she did shows, she would still take her work home to her dark room.
She has expanded her portfolio to include other animals, as well. She needs a good picture or a personal appointment to paint other animals, as she is much less familiar with them.
