Art at Oxford?
I was wondering if I could major in art with a photography emphasis at Oxford University. If so, what college would I apply to? I’m an American.
In a word, no, you can’t. In this country we don’t ‘major’ and ‘minor’ in subjects at university. When we apply to go to university we apply to study one subject (or in the case of joint honours two subjects) and when we get there that is all we study. We don’t study a range of subjects and then ‘major’ later on – university here is much more specialised.
In addition to this, art and photography aren’t subjects that you can study at Oxford. Oxford is based around academic subjects, not artistic ones. If my memory serves me correctly from my time there, art (other than history of art) and photography aren’t even available as a course that you can take. If that’s what you’re interested in, I’d recommend applying to a university that is much more suited to the arts as opposed to academics.
