Somerset House- London’s Cultural Heart by Eoin Evans
Located in the heart of the city of London, Somerset House is the venue for many of the city’s arts and cultural events. A majestic building with a neoclassical feel to it, Somerset House hosts everything from music concerts to classic film screenings.
Throughout the year the events calendar for Somerset House is full and there is always something of interest going on. In the winter months there is an outdoor ice skating rink that is fun for all the family and in December it is particularly festive making it one of the quintessential Christmas experiences in London. In the warm summer months you can take a guided tour of the building and its grounds including many areas that are normally close off to the general public.
As well as being open to the public for a variety of events Somerset House is also home to the Royal Society of Literature. Each year there is a new writer in residence who is chosen to curate the years literary events as well as work on their own pieces. Throughout the year the Royal Society of Literature holds lectures and events and has been doing so since its formation in 1820.
During the summer school holidays the younger generations are invited to participate in workshops and activities such as animation workshops and photography projects. There are also talks and classes on arts related media such as film making and fashion. The summer programmes are designed to encourage and nurture the artistic side of children and young adults and give them a creative outlet. There are also a number of adult workshops available as well.
Somerset House is walking distance from many mainline underground stations including Trafalgar Square, Holborn and Temple. If you are visiting the city there are also a range of cheap London hotels close by which are ideal if you want to explore the area and perhaps take part in one of the many events at Somerset House. With so much going on it doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Somerset House there is certain to be something on that appeals to all tastes.
