For quality landscape photography, a good amount of time should be put into the preperation of the shot. The ideas shown below are some things that photographers should consider before taking the shot.
1. Depth of field (DOF) – Good landscape photography pictures often require for everything in the field of view to be in focus. This is done by increasing the DOF (making it deeper).
The aperture controls the depth of field. Use a higher aperture setting to get a smaller aperture opening. The depth of field gets deeper as the aperture opening gets smaller.
2. Allways Use a Tripod – A deeper depth of field commonly requires the shutter be kept open longer for good exposure.
While the shutter is open, the slightest movement of the camera will cause unwanted blur. To decrease the chances of this happening, use a tripod.
3. Framing – We all have those busy vacation photos with so much in the shot that no-one can quite tell what the subject is. This is normally caused by distractions in the landscape. These distractions can be anything from people to dominant colored buildings.
These distractions should not overpower the shot. Use the viewfinder to cut out these distractions. They will not be visible in the picture if they are not visible in the viewfinder.
4. Foreground – In outdoor photography, foreground is usually given the credit it is due. It should be used to help guide the viewer into the shot.
When searching for that perfect scene, look for natural lines that lead into it. Keep in mind, unless the foreground is the subject of the shot, it should not dominate the entire scene.
5. Natural Lighting – Most people wait for a nice sunny day before they grab their camera and head out. The photographers that do this lose out on some great landscapes.
The mood of the landscape will sometimes be greatly enhanced by the weather. Clouds themselves can also be made the subject of the landscape.
Dawn and dusk are usually nice times to shoot outdoor scenes. Deeper contrasts and textures are created by shadows. The light may even be a different color and cast a golden hue over the land. After all, who doesn’t like a sunset?
6. Perspective – It is often possible to take a ordinary looking scene and create an inspirational landscape just by moving go a different spot.
Try changing the viewpoint of the shot. Kneel down low and shoot at an upward angle. Get on higher terrain and shoot at a downward angle. Move the horizon around the viewfinder a bit.
7. Composing the Shot – The best rule of composition to use that gives the most noticeable results is the Rule of Thirds. This rule expresses the idea that just the correct amount of stress in the picture creates more interest.
This rule is completed by dividing the scene into 9 equal fields with two horizontal and two vertical lines (like a tic-tac-toe board game). The points of interest should be placed where the vertical and horizontal lines cross.
Vertical and horizontal lines in the shot (the horizon or side of a building) should be placed on a corresponding (horizontal or vertical) line in the virtual viewfinder grid (tic tac toe game board).
Always remember, the only thing that will show up on the final result is what shows up in the viewfinder. So make that viewable space look as interesting as you can.
