Is the Nikon D60 Moisture Proof?

Well I just bought myself a Nikon D60 with a 55mm – 200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S lens. I was outside trying it out the other day when my father gave me a two zip lock bags and told me to put my camera and parts into it before entering the house and then wait until my camera has reached room temperature. If I didn’t he said, moisture would condense inside the camera and eventually ruin it.

When my dad was in college, he was a big time photography nut and took thousands of pictures. Quite frankly his old pictures are some of the best I’ve ever seen so I’m sure he knows what he’s talking about. However, his knowledge is a little dated as he hasn’t even used anything more powerful than a point-and-shoot in decades. So I was wondering, how much will I have to worry about moisture with my camera?

You need to worry some. Your father speaks from years of experience with film cameras, which, if anything, were more resistant to moisture than today’s digital bodies. There’s no danger in taking your camera outside when it’s cold. The danger, as he said, is in bringing it back in, when the rapid heating can cause moisture in the air to condense on the camera body, both externally and internally. If the camera is powered on, this can lead to a short circuit, which leads invariably to a dead camera.

A plastic bag minimizes the danger, the idea being that once all the moisture from the air that’s sealed *in* the bag condenses, there’s no more to be found, and so the camera will (should) slowly, asymptomatically return to room temperature. This requires more or less discipline depending on how exited you are about the pictures you just took. It’s a rule I don’t always follow myself, but it’s a good practice to be in.
