Wedding Photography Styles by John Smith
With all the different responsibilities of the wedding it can sometimes feel like a big headache trying to get the perfect photographer. Is money an issue when looking for the right photographer for you? Figure out how many hours of coverage are you going to need? And the most important question of them all is to consider what kind of photography are wanting? Yes, all these questions are confusing, but necessary in order to get exactly what it is you want! To help you make the right choices for your wedding I thought I would take the time and explore in detail the different approaches photographers take toward their work. Here goes:
Number 1: Traditional. This was probably the most common option among those getting married about a decade previous. You may even remember this type of style. These photos are really uncomfortable for the individuals partaking in them, as you all have to act for them. Basically this form of photography just means that the photographer choreographs as many staged shots involving all the guests and including the bride and groom as well. Practically no couple will choose the traditional approach these days, its just not seen as trendy and well in my opinion it looks terrible. The main reason why just a decade ago this style of photograph was extremely popular is simply because technology hadn’t advanced as it has today and so photographers were severely limited. They were generally shooting on film, and were restricted by both economic and logistical factors from shooting too many frames. Literally everything changed when digital was introduced.
Number 2: Photo Journalism. This is literally the other side of traditional form of photography. Rather than relying on staged and posed photographs that are heavily directed, this approach aims to literally document the day, as it happens. The best of these photographers will never be noticed. This form of photography is simply to capture the moment as it happens, capturing all the natural emotions as they happen letting the day go on. The photographers that are practitioners of this style will be invisible the guests and do their job of just capturing the best moments. Their main goal will be to avoid disturbing the guests in order to capture the best moments as they happen. This form of photography can literally take years to master and is something that few ever master properly, but when done nothing can match it.
Number 3: Contemporary. Quite simply this is known as a contemporary form of photography. To put it simply this form of photography is the mix between the two above. A photographer using this style will have a goal to use the style that seems most befitting for the moment. The goal of the contemporary photographer is to stage shots that are extremely natural looking, quite different from that of traditional based styles. Most wedding photographers will opt to give the option of contemporary form of wedding photos.
