Do art institutes or universities pay a lot of attention to your grades in mathematics?
I’ve created a great portfolio (most photography, pencil, and painting) and I’m getting all A’s in school (A+ in AP sketching, Photography, and AP Literature), but I have a D+ in math. I’m trying the hardest I can in math but the curriculum is different from what I was using last year and I completely misunderstand everything in it. Is this going to break my chances of getting into art institutions?
One poor grade in math will not blow your chances of getting into a good art school. If the rest of your grades are good – and it sounds like they are – and your portfolio is strong, then you should be good. A lot of art schools want SATs, so be sure to take them if they are needed. But even there, if you do okay on the CR and writing, but not so well on the math, you’ll still be a good candidate for strong art schools.
If your grades are good and your portfolio is strong, you could look at some of these really great art schools: RISD, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, SVA, Parsons, Pratt, Mass Art, Maryland Institute, Cal Arts, Cranbrook, Art Center College of Design, San Francisco Art Institute, Syracuse, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, and so on.
