The Art Of Still Photography

The lady artist is not just a working artist but also the gallery director of a local art center. The resident of Hempfield Township discovered her talents in high school, majored in art at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has been active since 1970 in the local art club. The art center regularly exhibits her work. She says she works in oils and pastels and does some silk screen printing.

Members of another club invited her so that she can show landscape pastel painting from a photograph. However, she does not recommend that beginning artists work exclusively from photographs. She claims that all starters should go out to feel the nuances of light and shadow. If you want more paintings resources visit custom painting canvas.

Photographs that can be referred to later, sketching an actual scene and absorbing the details is possible only when one paints outside. She would normally do it like that. She utilizes various photographs to create composite landscapes. She states that this useful when her commercial customers demand certain elements that aren’t in one photograph.

It is easy to adjust a painting in a way that it does not include aspects not desirable from a photograph that is being used as a reference. It is up to you to decide what turns as the most important part of your painting. Normally she wouldn’t do it but using a photograph helps her decide how the work would look when it is completed.

For her model, she took a photo during the fall at the Slippery Rock and enlarged that photo to paint the pastel portrait. SO that no part of the painting gets covered by the frame, she avoids drawing to the edge of the sheet. Because she paints on the wrong side of the pastel sheet that is less textured, she is able to achieve layering in colors. She uses blues and reds to evoke dark logs and branches rising from the water. Her photographs are added with bits of red to enhance certain sections of her painting. She is careful in exploiting the characteristic of pastels being close to using pure pigment.

According to her, there are times when you need to stop and think about the color values. It isn’t too wise to use too much light too soon. When painting with pastels one can always layer the lighter values over the darker ones without worrying about conserving the whit areas like in watercolors. The pastels should be felt with ease.

A caution should be exercised when using the color ranges according to her. Today’s wide range of colors offers the advantage of getting the right color without having to mix different shades. If you aren’t satisfied with the result, you can comfortably wipe the color off and start over again while painting with pastels. The medium is easy going.
