Chefchaouen or Marrakesh?
I recently got the opportunity to travel to Morocco, I’m kind of stuck on where I’m going to go. Any body have any information on either of these cities that could help me out? Anything from a photography perspective? would like to shoot portraits of traditional North africa
Depends on what you like and what do you expect from traditional North Africa. If you love a big city, go to Marrakech. I, personally, I’m not really found of Marrakech as it’s full of tourists and overrated. if you want to find something traditional, it’s not going to happen in Marrakech. You should head more to the villages around Marrakech or go to Ouarzazate for example (which is half a day driving). You can even go to Erg Chebbi or Merzouga (desert), but it’s quite far.
I love the Rif mountains (OK, my parents are from the Rif mountains, so it’s not really fair) and Chefchaouen would definitely be my choice. Some previous colleagues also love with Chefchaouen.
The city itself is lovely and the typical blue~whitish buildings is great for shooting. Also, the city is not far from Tangier (big city) and Tetouan (lovely city as well). It has a bit of a Spanish feel, though.
Chefchaouen is getting more and more tourists unfortunately. If you want to shoot portraits, go in the Rif Mountains. Further inland, the more traditional villages you’ll find. Do always ask if you can shoot there. Have fun!
