5 Portrait Photography Tips – Taking Exceptional Family Portraits   by Michelle Hurley

Almost every family wants a good picture of themselves in recent years. Taking good portraits of the family presents a wonderful opportunity to capture the intimate relationship between all members of the family.

Most of the time consists of the immediate family portrait of two to six people. Here are some tips for using digital photography when shooting your next photo session of the family.

Tip # 1 they are comfortable

It’s hard to get great expressions on the faces when people are straining to maintain a certain pose. It is important to do everything possible to represent the family in a way that will give the best chance to capture your best ‘side’.

Tip # 2 Check the composition of its

Part of the challenge of family portraits to compose the shot in a way that will attract the viewer in and around the picture of a nice way. Pose family members of the triangles. The natural flow of the portrait will be allowed the viewer to see each family member in an easy and progressive.

Tip # 3 Use of Props

The use of a large wing-backed chair with mom or dad sitting in the chair and other members of the family posed around it always makes a great shot. Using park benches, trees, rocks, and even the ground or floor are very good ideas to help you capture that single shot. Do not be afraid to use their imagination and creativity!

Tip # 4 similar dressing

This should be discussed before the session of the family will take place. That will save you many headaches if all family members are dressed in complimenting styles and colors. Strips, dots, colors clash and printed clothing can give a disconcerting and uncomfortable feeling to a photo. We want to produce a picture that conveys harmony and love between family members and attract viewers to the faces, not are distracted by the clothing that is extravagant or shock.

Tip # 5 Look at the lighting

If taken in a studio, make sure you have your lights set up to enable each person’s face is clearly seen. Despite the shadows can add intensity and interest, be sure it is properly balanced. Taking pictures of the family out can present a new set of challenges.

Shoot for the golden hour of the day (one hour before the sun sets) is an option that will give you wonderful lighting conditions. Again, it is critical that faces all family members can be seen clearly.

Taking family portraits can present some interesting challenges. You, as the photographer, have the opportunity to capture the character and intimacy of the family unit. It takes work and practice to create a stunning portrait that will become a family memory in the coming years.
