I am planning to buy a dSLR camera specially 4 macro photography? Value 4 money: Cannon xTi OR Nikon D40?
My initial plan was to buy Nikon D40 (as it is really a good beginners camera) and stash on good lenses as time and money permits. I was looking at the prices for micro lenses for Nikon and Cannon, and it seems that Nikon has more expensive macro lenses compared to Cannon.
What’s your take on it? Or I need to look more carefully?
PS: One of the main motives for me to buy a DLR is to do macro photography. I am a student, and don’t have crazy loads of funds to support ALL those awesome awesome leses.
B&H has the XTi with 18-55 lens for $610. They have the same set-up with the D40 for $445. There’s your answer.
There are two common macro lens focal lengths – 60mm and 100/105mm. Be very careful about choosing a lens! You really want a lens that specifies 1:1 reproduction ratio. (1:1 magnification) If you buy a lesser “macro” lens, you will have to add an adapter that costs as much as the lens to attain 1:1.
Canon’s 60mm costs about $400 and their 100mm costs about $500.
Nikon’s AF-S 60mm costs about $480 and their 105mm “VR” macro costs about $760. You need to use these particular lenses if you want to have autofocus on the D40. If you can do without autofocus, which I think is not a problem for macro photography, Nikon has a 60mm macro lens for $380. That’s the one I use.
Add up the money for the camera with 18-55 lens for yuor initial purchase and the macro lens of your choice and see what you short term costs are going to be.
Personally, I’d get the D40 and add the 60mm non-AF-S lens for a total cost of $825, plus the cost of a memory card of about $20-25. The same “kit” with an XTi will cost $1,010 plus a card. Nikon is still about $200 ahead of the game. If you get the AF-S lens, you are still coming out with an extra $100 in your pocket.
Teef talks about losing more of your image in a macro shot, but this is only if you are not able to really get as close as you’d like.
For my own macro shots with the 60mm lens, go here:

For ONLY the D70s samples, which started out as the same 6MP size that the D40 offers, go here:

This is a full frame shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/814790019/ and this is cropped out of the same shot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/2157851632/ so I will concede the point to Teef. I’d still buy the D40 and compose carfeully with the final image in mind.
